Can You Sell an Insurance Write-Off for Scrap in Canada?

An older silver sedan secured on a flatbed tow truck.

You can consider an independent scrap sale when you are entitled to release the vehicle and the claim arrangements allow it. A write-off decision does not, by itself, tell you who owns the vehicle after settlement. Confirm that question with the claim representative before accepting a separate purchase or collection.

Which claim stage are you at?

Identify whether assessment, settlement or vehicle retention is still unresolved. Each stage can change who authorizes movement and which records are needed. Keep the insurer’s instructions separate from a scrap buyer’s proposed offer.

Claim position What to confirm before a separate sale
The insurer has not completed its assessment. Ask whether the vehicle must remain available for inspection.
You have received a settlement offer. Ask who receives ownership if you accept it.
You want to keep the damaged vehicle. Ask whether retention is available and how it affects the settlement.
You have accepted a settlement. Check the signed ownership and release terms before arranging another buyer.
The vehicle was stolen and later recovered. Confirm police release, insurance ownership and the current registration record.

Keep the VIN and claim reference available when contacting the representative. An appointment with a collector does not settle these questions.

What should you ask about retaining the vehicle?

Request the retention terms in writing before comparing a separate sale with the settlement. Retention can affect the amount paid and the vehicle’s permitted future use. Do not assume that every claim gives the owner the same option.

Ask the representative:

  • Is owner retention available for this vehicle and damage classification?
  • What settlement amount applies if I retain it?
  • Who holds title or ownership after the documents are signed?
  • Which brand or status will be recorded?
  • Who authorizes collection from its current location?
  • Are there outstanding finance, storage or evidence requirements?

Compare the actual alternatives. Do not add a full insurer payout and an independent scrap offer if the payout requires surrendering the vehicle. That would count two incompatible outcomes as though both were available.

How do ICBC and SGI guide the process?

A sedan, SUV, pickup truck and minivan parked together.

Use the insurer’s claim sequence and obtain a vehicle-specific answer about release. A provincial scrap guide covers the later sale; it does not replace the claim representative’s instructions.

ICBC describes damage assessment, the repairability decision, belongings and plates, payment, and insurance follow-up on its write-off page. Our ICBC process guide remains the detailed BC starting point. Ask the representative about retention rather than interpreting the page’s general sequence as a guaranteed buy-back offer.

SGI publishes total-loss guidance. Its inspection page specifically addresses vehicles retained as part of a claim settlement and says SGI will advise on necessary inspections. That road-use branch does not establish that every retained vehicle must be repaired before recycling.

What changes in Ontario, Alberta and Québec?

Personal belongings gathered in a box on a car seat.

Your insurer handles the settlement, while the province’s registration rules govern the vehicle record and future use. Ask both questions where needed. A settlement description is not enough to decide whether a damaged vehicle can be rebuilt.

Province Relevant official distinction
Ontario The branding program separates salvage, rebuilt and irreparable vehicles.
Alberta The salvage-inspection process concerns returning an eligible salvage vehicle to registration.
Québec SAAQ’s flood-damage rules identify irreparable criteria and restrictions that cannot be replaced by a buyer’s assurance.

The vehicle-status comparison explains these terms. If the car was registered in another province, identify both jurisdictions before relying on a local checklist.

What if the vehicle has flood, fire or battery damage?

Reusable vehicle components arranged on workshop shelves.

Disclose the damage before discussing transport, and avoid operating the vehicle to demonstrate its condition. The assessor needs the known event, any inspection already completed and any unresolved hazards. A dry exterior or a silent dashboard does not establish that the car is safe.

SAAQ instructs owners not to start vehicles immersed through flooding and directs them to towing or transport. Use its flood-damage instructions for the Québec branch. For an electric or hybrid car, the EV disposal guide explains battery disclosure and transport questions.

Ask the insurer before removing components that may be needed for assessment. Keep a record of any change in the vehicle’s condition or location after the initial claim inspection.

What should you keep when an independent sale proceeds?

An older silver sedan secured on a flatbed tow truck.

Keep the claim release or retention terms with the completed sale and collection documents. Check that the buyer, VIN, amount and location match the actual transaction. Resolve any lender interest and yard-release arrangements before handover.

Use the lien guide when finance remains outstanding. Follow the relevant provincial guide for plates, registration and insurance; the vehicle leaving the yard does not automatically complete each action.

Once your right to sell is clear, the free scrap car value calculator can start an individual assessment. Its hypothetical examples are not an insurer’s settlement valuation, a guaranteed salvage payment or approval to release claim evidence.
