How to Sell a Car to a Junkyard
How do you approach a junkyard about selling a car?

Contact the buyer with the year, make, model, condition and vehicle location. Ask whether it accepts that vehicle and how it assesses an offer. Confirm the buyer’s identity, collection arrangements and payment terms before transporting the car or agreeing to release it.
Check the buyer’s business details, relevant licensing and recent customer feedback. The Canadian scrapping guide explains the buyer checks to make before agreeing a sale.
Explain missing major components and whether the vehicle rolls and steers. A clear description helps the yard identify the actual vehicle rather than assuming that it is complete and easily accessible.

What do you ask before accepting the amount?

Ask whether the offer includes collection, what remains subject to inspection and what documents the buyer requires. Request a clear record of the proposed terms. An advertised price per tonne does not establish the amount payable for your complete vehicle.
Read how scrap car value is calculated for the difference between a material illustration and a purchase offer. Use the same condition description when comparing yards.
Ask what condition the quote assumes and what remains subject to checking. Confirm the amount you would receive, the payment arrangement and the vehicle release process. The buyer’s willingness to assess a car is not the same as a completed transaction.
| Stage | What remains to establish |
|---|---|
| Initial inquiry | The vehicle’s identity, condition and location. |
| Proposed amount | Included services and inspection assumptions. |
| Inspection | The condition of the car actually available for purchase. |
| Agreement | The final accepted amount and completed records. |
Do you drive or tow the vehicle to the yard?
Agree transport with the buyer before moving the car. Describe a non-running vehicle and any difficulty with wheels or steering. Do not assume that a yard will collect every vehicle free or that an unsafe car can be driven simply to complete a sale.
Cash For Cars includes free towing with an accepted purchase. The collection process explains inspection, acceptance and payment at pickup.
Confirm that the buyer accepts the actual vehicle and agrees how it will arrive. Ask whether inspection happens before a final amount is agreed and whether an appointment is required. A yard address does not mean unannounced deliveries are accepted.
Describe a non-running car and any missing components before arranging transport. Do not pay for a separate tow based only on an advertised amount. Compare the accepted delivery terms with a collected purchase proposal using the same vehicle description.
What record do you keep after the sale?
Keep a completed sale record identifying the vehicle, purchaser, date and amount. Follow the registration and insurance steps that apply to your province. Physical delivery to a yard is not proof that every official record has been updated.
The Canadian scrapping guide connects these steps. You can request a separate assessment through the free scrap car value calculator before choosing a buyer.
Check the completed transaction record and keep your copy. Confirm that the vehicle identification, buyer and amount match the agreement. Remove belongings where accessible and understand which registration or insurance steps remain yours to complete.
A receipt for delivery does not necessarily answer every ownership question. Follow the provincial process relevant to your transaction rather than assuming that leaving the car at a yard finishes all administration.
How do you evaluate recycling claims without assuming a result?
Ask the receiving business how it handles reusable parts, fluids and remaining material. A general recycling statement does not establish that every component from your car will be reused or that every material will be recovered. Request relevant information without assuming a universal recovery percentage.
Use the vehicle recycling guide to understand the broad process. A purchaser’s disposal explanation and its offer amount answer different questions, so assess both rather than treating one as proof of the other.
