Overview

What Is the BC Scrap-It Program?

Older vehicle ready for retirement through a British Columbia scrap car program

The BC Scrap-It Program is a voluntary vehicle retirement incentive administered by the BC SCRAP-IT Society, an independent not-for-profit operating under the EcoForward Sustainable Solutions Society umbrella. The program offers British Columbia vehicle owners a credit toward cleaner transportation — public transit, e-bikes, lower-emission used vehicles, or new electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles — when they retire an eligible older, higher-emission vehicle.

The program was registered as a not-for-profit society in 2004 and has operated continuously since. Funding comes from program partners, grants, and the Society's own resources — Scrap-It is not a government department, and is not administered by the BC government directly. The program targets older, higher-emission vehicles because reducing their share of the BC fleet — and steering replacement choice toward lower-emission transportation — is the Society's core mandate.

Scrap-It is not a buyer for your vehicle. The Society provides an incentive credit in addition to whatever scrap value the vehicle has when retired through an authorized recycler. The Cash For Cars cash offer pays the vehicle's market value at pickup; the Scrap-It incentive is a separate credit issued by the Society after retirement is confirmed.

Eligibility

Who's Eligible for the BC Scrap-It Program?

Eligibility has two parts: the vehicle itself, and the owner applying. The BC SCRAP-IT Society sets the rules, so confirm your specific case at scrapit.ca before scrapping.

Vehicle Eligibility

Registration and insurance history. The vehicle must have been continuously insured with ICBC in your name for the 6 months immediately prior to your application date.

Currently insured and drivable. The vehicle must be currently insured and in driving condition on the day you apply.

Accepted classes. Passenger cars, SUVs, light trucks, vans, and motorcycles may qualify. Motorcycles carry a separate incentive value — verify current status.

Excluded classes. Boats, trailers, RVs, motor homes, and campers are excluded. Vehicles with active liens cannot be scrapped through the program.

Owner Eligibility

Registered owner. The applicant must be the registered owner of the vehicle.

BC resident. The applicant must be a British Columbia resident.

Insurance in applicant's name. The 6-month ICBC history must be in the applicant's name.

Under 19? Applicants under 19 can apply with a parental consent form from the Society.

Verify before applying: current model-year cutoff for 2026 applications and current motorcycle incentive status and value.

Incentives

What Incentives Does the BC Scrap-It Program Offer?

Scrap-It incentives are credits toward specific clean-transportation purchases — not cash. Current categories appear below; values are set by the BC SCRAP-IT Society and depend on annual program funding and participating-partner availability at the time of application.

Transit

Transit Credits

Credit toward a transit pass — TransLink Compass Card in the Lower Mainland, BC Transit elsewhere. Best suited to owners replacing a vehicle with transit-primary commuting. Verify current credit value.

E-Bike

E-Bike Credits

Credit toward a new e-bike or e-tricycle from a participating retailer. Current published value verified in May 2026: $750. Earlier program cycles published higher values.

Used Vehicle

Used Lower-Emission Vehicle Credits

Credit toward a used, more fuel-efficient replacement vehicle from a participating dealership. The replacement must meet emissions thresholds set by the Society.

ZEV

New Zero-Emission Vehicle Credits

Credit toward a new battery-electric or plug-in hybrid vehicle from a participating dealership. Verify current credit values and any stacking rules before purchase.

Sharing

E-Bike Sharing and Car Sharing Memberships

Credits may be available toward Modo car-share or e-bike-share memberships when partnered with Scrap-It. Verify current sharing partners and credit values.

Incentive amounts can change without notice. Applicants are entitled to the rebate offered on the day they apply — once submitted, that value is locked in.

Cash Offer Pairing

How Scrap-It Pairs With Cash For Cars

The cash you receive from Cash For Cars and the credit you receive from Scrap-It are independent payments from independent organizations. Cash For Cars pays the vehicle's BC market value at pickup or drop-off — typically $200–$1,000 for sedans, SUVs, and trucks depending on condition, weight, and current scrap pricing. The Scrap-It incentive is a separate credit issued by the BC SCRAP-IT Society after retirement is confirmed by an authorized recycler.

Operationally: apply to Scrap-It before scrapping the vehicle. The Society requires the vehicle to be insured and drivable at time of application — once retired, it cannot be applied for. After approval, you have 30 days to retire the vehicle at an authorized recycler. If the recycler you would be working with through Cash For Cars is on Scrap-It's authorized list, you can scrap through that channel and claim both. Confirm authorized-recycler status before scheduling.

The Cash For Cars offer is the same whether or not you claim Scrap-It — you do not trade one for the other. See your BC vehicle's cash value with the scrap and junk car value calculator, or read cash for cars in British Columbia and cash for cars in Surrey, BC for service detail.

Application Process

How to Apply for the BC Scrap-It Program

STEP 01

Confirm eligibility

Review the vehicle and owner criteria above. Verify the 6-month insurance history, vehicle class, and whether any liens are registered. The Society is the only authoritative source for confirming your case.

STEP 02

Choose your incentive category

Decide which Scrap-It category fits your post-scrap plan — transit credit, e-bike, used lower-emission vehicle, new zero-emission vehicle, or sharing membership.

STEP 03

Submit your application

Apply through the BC SCRAP-IT Society directly. Documentation typically includes proof of ownership, ICBC insurance history, BC driver's licence, and your chosen incentive category.

STEP 04

Schedule retirement within 30 days

From approval, you have 30 days to scrap the vehicle at an authorized drop-off location. Miss the window and the application closes — you will need to reapply.

STEP 05

Bring the right materials

Remove your licence plates yourself and bring them. Confirm the recycler is on the Society's authorized list before driving there.

STEP 06

Receive the incentive

Once the authorized recycler confirms retirement to the Society, your incentive is issued. EFT rebates are deposited to your bank account; vehicle-purchase credits apply at the participating dealership.

Rejection Reasons

Common Reasons Vehicles Get Rejected from Scrap-It

Most rejected applications fall into a small set of categories.

Insurance

Insurance history does not meet the 6-month rule

The applicant lacks 6 months of continuous ICBC insurance in their name, or the vehicle was uninsured during part of that window.

Condition

Vehicle is not drivable or not currently insured

Vehicles parked, uninsured, or non-functional for an extended period do not qualify.

Class

Wrong vehicle class

Boats, trailers, RVs, motor homes, and campers are excluded from the BC Scrap-It Program.

Lien

Vehicle has a lien or encumbrance

Active liens disqualify the vehicle until cleared.

Deadline

Vehicle was not retired at an authorized recycler within 30 days

Non-authorized facilities do not qualify even with approval; the 30-day window is strict.

It offers credits toward transit, e-bikes, lower-emission used vehicles, and new zero-emission vehicles when BC owners retire eligible older vehicles. The program has run since 2004.
Is the BC Scrap-It Program cancelled?
No. The program is operational as of 2026 and scrapit.ca is accepting applications. Specific incentive amounts and partner lists change over time, so confirm current values before applying.
Who runs the BC Scrap-It Program?

Can I get cash AND the Scrap-It incentive?
Yes — these are separate, independent payments. Cash For Cars pays the vehicle's market value, typically $200–$1,000 in BC; the Society issues the Scrap-It credit after retirement is confirmed by an authorized recycler. Use the scrap and junk car value calculator to estimate the separate cash offer.
How long has my vehicle needed to be registered in BC?
The vehicle must have been continuously insured with ICBC in your name for the 6 months immediately prior to your application date. It must also be currently insured and drivable on the application day.
What vehicle types do not qualify?

You have 30 days from your Scrap-It approval to retire the vehicle at an authorized drop-off location. Miss the 30-day window and your application closes automatically — you will need to reapply.
How do I receive the Scrap-It incentive?
Cash-style rebates such as e-bike and transit credits are typically issued by EFT after the authorized recycler confirms retirement. Vehicle-replacement credits apply at the participating dealership when you complete the replacement purchase.
Does Cash For Cars guarantee Scrap-It approval?
No. Approval is determined solely by the BC SCRAP-IT Society. Cash For Cars handles cash offers and vehicle removal; the Society handles Scrap-It eligibility and incentive issuance. Separate processes by separate organizations.
